Northern Michigan is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, and it's even better when you can bring your four-legged friend along. If you're looking for dog-friendly beaches where your pup can run, swim, and enjoy the Great Lakes, here are five of our favorite spots to check out: 

 

1. Old Mission Lighthouse Park – Traverse City 

At the tip of the Old Mission Peninsula, Old Mission Lighthouse Park offers a spacious, shallow beach perfect for dogs who love to wade. The park features picnic areas and a historic lighthouse open to the public from May through November. Dogs are welcome on a leash, making it an ideal spot for a scenic walk along the shore. You and your pet will also enjoy the drive up and down the peninsula, where there are many farms and roadside stands to stop at for produce and fresh flowers!  

  • Location: 20500 Center Rd (M-37), Traverse City, MI 49686
  • Features: Wide beach area with shallow water, picnic area, and historic lighthouse.
  • Pet Policy: Dogs are welcome on a leash.
  • Note: The lighthouse is open to the public May-November; the park, beach, and trails are open year-round. 

 

2. Frankfort Beach – Frankfort 

Located along Lake Michigan, Frankfort Beach boasts a designated dog run area at the far north end of the beach. Accessible via paved and non-paved walkways, this area allows dogs to play under voice or whistle control. Please note that dogs are not permitted on the main beach area outside the dog run. After checking out the beach, you can walk through the quaint downtown or stop at one of the pet-friendly restaurants or ice cream shops! 

  • Location: Miami St, Frankfort, MI 49635
  • Features: Dog run area at the far north end of the beach.
  • Pet Policy: Dogs are allowed in the dog run area under voice or whistle control.
  • Note: Dogs are not permitted on the main beach area outside the dog run. 

 

3. Maple Bay Natural Area – Traverse City 

Maple Bay Natural Area is a serene spot on East Grand Traverse Bay, offering a peaceful environment for dogs and their owners. The area features a sandy beach and wooded trails, providing ample space for exploration. Dogs should be kept on a leash, and pet owners are encouraged to clean up after their pets to maintain the area's natural beauty. 

  • Location: US-31, Williamsburg, MI 49690
  • Features: 450-acre park with sunflower fields, hiking trails, and views of East Grand Traverse Bay.
  • Pet Policy: Leashed dogs are welcome to explore the trails and beach.
  • Note: The trail to the beach is somewhat steep and approximately 0.3 miles. 

 

4. Esch Beach – Honor 

Situated within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Esch Beach is a hidden gem featuring a warm creek that flows into Lake Michigan. Leashed pets are allowed to the right of Esch Road when facing the water, offering a tranquil setting for a walk along the shoreline. Please be aware that no pets are allowed to the left of Esch Road. You will also need a National Park pass to park in the lot near the beach.   • Location: Esch Rd, Honor, MI 49640
  • Features: Beach at the mouth of Otter Creek with a warm creek flowing into Lake Michigan.
  • Pet Policy: Leashed pets are allowed to the right of Esch Road when facing the water.
  • Note: No pets are allowed to the left of Esch Road. 

 

5. Elberta Beach – Elberta 

For a quieter beach experience, Elberta Beach is a half mile stretch of sand maintained by nature. Dogs are welcome on a leash, and the area provides a peaceful setting for a leisurely walk. The nearby Elberta Pier offers beautiful views of Lake Michigan, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing day with your pup.  

  • Location: Elberta, MI 49628
  • Features: Half mile stretch of sand maintained by nature.
  • Pet Policy: Dogs are welcome on a leash.
  • Note: The area provides a peaceful setting for a leisurely walk. 

 

Tips for Visiting Dog-Friendly Beaches: 

  • Leash Laws: Always check local regulations regarding leash requirements.
  • Clean Up: Bring waste bags to clean up after your dog.
  • Hydration: Ensure your dog has access to fresh water, especially on hot days. Collapsible bowls make it easy on the go!
  • Shade: Provide shade for your dog to prevent overheating.
  • Respect Others: Keep your dog under control and be mindful of other beachgoers.
  • Towels: Bring a few to put down in your car to catch sand or to dry your pup off after your big adventure.
